FOOTWEAR

BIRCHBURY SHOES

I’m a big fan of shoes that don’t constrict the feet. I also like a shoe that zero to minimal lift. I’ve been wearing Birchbury shoes for years. I was so impressed with them that I reached out to the company and snagged an affiliate link. If you’d like a pair or just want to cruise their website and window-shop, click this link.

EXERCISE ESSENTIALS

There are several pieces of equipment that I feel that every human should have and these include: a set of resistance bands, a balance pad and a physio ball (yoga ball). In addition to these, there are some others that I have found great use and would recommend. (SEE “OTHER TOOLS”)

GAIAM RESISTANCE BAND

Not all bands are made the same. With that said, this particular band is inexpensive, durable and practical. Not to mention, I like the feel of it in my hands - as it doesn’t have that rubbery feel and smell that most resistance bands have. I know, I’m being picky here!

SLANT BOARD

A slant board is an excellent way to stretch the posterior leg - from the heel all the way up to the glutes. The consistent use of the slant board will also aid in the re-alignment of the foot and ankle and additionally, give more flexibility to the ankle. This is important for many reasons. One reason is that, when one has a tight achilles tendon (for example), it limits flexion of the knee in the act of squatting (bending at the knee). If one can not bend adequately at the knee, other areas must compensate.

BALANCE BOARD

There are many balance pads out there - but if you want to enhance your sessions, you will need one.

This one in particular is more inexpensive than the others, has a good deal of thickness and comes in black, blue and grey. It also has some great reviews.

AERO TRAINER - A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PHYSIO-BALL

PHYSIO BALL

It is my opinion that everyone needs a physio ball. Often called a “yoga ball”, it provides both a comfortable and enjoyable exercise experience.

For something more stable, and in a way, even more comfortable and versatile, there is the aero-trainer. I use this piece of exercise equipment to help “decompress” my spine, to practice my back extensions and to…

YOGA BLOCKS

Gaiam Yoga Block

These are your standard, inexpensive-yet-quality yoga blocks that you can use for a variety of things. I have two main things.

WRIST Buddy Yoga Blocks

I definitely recommend these slightly more expensive yoga blocks if you want to alleviate pressure on your wrists.

THERAPY BALL

Coregeous Ball

This is an inexpensive piece of equipment that is very useful for several things. I use it predominantly for pelvic tilts - which I have found (for me) to be extremely important to the health of my lower back.

FOAM ROLLERS

GAIAM FOAM ROLLER

I’m not a big fan of “rolling out” your pain. AND, as I’ve mentioned, I never place my full weight on a foam roller. However, I WILL use it as a bolster for when I am doing bridges and windshield wipers. I will also use it to assist me with wall squats.

There are several versions of foam rollers out there, but I prefer the compact version. This 12-inch version is perfect for travel and is all that you’ll need (in my opinion).

PULL UP BAR

Pull Up Bar

This is an inexpensive and easy-to-install pull-up bar that you can place within a doorway. I know that when I pass under mine, I am inclined to hang, decompress, and/or really engage my muscles with the three common pull-up positions (narrow chin-up position, wide and neutral).

Also! … A pull-up bar is an excellent anchor for any resistance bands!

GYMNASTIC RINGS

GYM RINGS

This is the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to gym rings (currently at a 4.8 out of 5.0 on Amazon). While I will use a pull-up bar to actually do “pull-ups”, I use gym rings much more frequently; to hang and decompress the spine after a long day, to assist myself in squats, exercising the posterior muscles with reverse planks and reclined rows - you name it!

HOUSEHOLD RECOMMENDATIONS

MediFlow Water Pillow

I tell my clients all the time — “It is wonderful that you prioritize massage therapy. But in order to accelerate and prolong our health, we need to breath better, eat better, move better and SLEEP better.” Therefore, since we should be spending approximately 8 hours a night sleeping, we should seek to have the most restful, deep sleep that we can. Find a great mattress! Comfortable sheets! But overall (especially if you have neck issues), find the best pillow!

Leg Bolster

When you have back pain and/or hip pain, we NEED to lessen tension and pressure. This bolster is the tallest bolster available at 8” and will take a great deal off of the spine and hip. This is a great, affordable bolster to have handy if and when you have a flare-up OR when you’ve had a long, exhaustive day and you want to treat your body to some extra TLC.

ZEN BLOKS BOLSTER

This bolster is more on the pricey side (currently at $129.99), however, it elevates the knees higher (11”), and provides (for some) a more relaxing position for the knee and lower leg. I’ve added this one to the list only because it can be more versatile, and holds the legs in a more comfortable position.

PREGNANCY PILLOW

I have a question for you? Why buy a body pillow if it only supports your front? When my wife got pregnant and I tried this pillow, I was jealous. Not only did it cradle my neck sufficiently, it provided a bolster for my thighs/knees (that wouldn’t fall out), and provided resistance from rolling forward and back. Limiting the amount of twisting, and spending time in misalignment can be crucial. If you don’t have a pillow already, and/or if you’re a side-sleeper, I would definitely give this a try. Man or woman… it’s about comfort, support and getting quality sleep!
